Ping

A diagnostic tool that measures round-trip latency to a network host — and a useful metric for choosing the closest, fastest VPN server.

§ 01

Definition

Ping is a network utility that sends small ICMP echo-request packets to a target host and measures how long the reply takes to come back. The result, reported in milliseconds, is the round-trip time — a direct measure of latency. The term 'ping' has also become a generic synonym for latency itself: a 'low ping' connection is a low-latency one.

§ 02

Why Ping Matters for VPN Users

When choosing a VPN server, ping is the single best predictor of how responsive the connection will feel. A server with a 20 ms ping will feel snappier for browsing, gaming, and video calls than one with a 200 ms ping, even if the latter has more advertised bandwidth. Most VPN client apps display the ping to each available server and let you sort by it; some auto-select the lowest-ping server for you.

§ 03

Limits

Ping measures only the round-trip to the VPN server, not to the eventual destination. A low-ping VPN server in your country plus a high-latency destination across the world still delivers a slow experience to that destination. Some networks block ICMP entirely, in which case the VPN client may estimate ping using a different method or omit it. Ping also does not measure bandwidth, packet loss, or jitter — all of which can affect the connection independently.
