Definition
In the VPN context, a server is the remote machine that accepts client connections, terminates the encrypted tunnel, and forwards traffic onward to its eventual destinations. Replies follow the reverse path. The server's IP is what websites you visit see. Commercial VPN providers operate fleets of these servers across many countries; enterprise VPNs run them at corporate data centers or in cloud infrastructure.
What Servers Determine
Several user-visible characteristics depend on the server. Geographic location determines apparent IP location. Hardware quality and load determine throughput and latency. Configuration determines which protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2) and which features (port forwarding, P2P, obfuscation) are supported. Storage architecture (disk vs RAM-only) determines whether the server can persist any data across reboots, which is the foundation of credible no-logs claims.
Choosing a Server
VPN clients usually let you pick a specific server or auto-select based on a goal: lowest ping (for performance), specific country (for geo-spoofing), specific feature (P2P-optimized, obfuscated, double-VPN). The lowest-ping server is the safe default for general use. For streaming, picking a server in the country whose content library you want is the right move.
